Me-Made: The Curse/Der Fluch PLUS Girl's Skirt/Mädchenrock

The Curse

(Cue scary music...)

One day before my first Me-Made month, May of last year, commenced, DS broke his leg. Well, he was six years old, something was bound to happen sooner or later.

During the first half of Self-Stitched September, both kids came down with pneumonia. Hmmm. Do I detect a pattern here?

Imagine my relief, when MMMF commenced and we were all well. As we all know, posting has been sparse these last two weeks. Here's why: First, DS came down with a feverish flu. Then, DD came down with a very painful case of tonsillitis.

In between caring, cuddling and doctor's visits, I managed to take some pictures (later). I also managed to listen to the powers that be.

This is it. This is my last me-made month. I can't take the responsibility for what might happen next.

The Skirt: Inspiration

I think the inspiration for this skirt came in three parts:

First, I needed to sew something to cheer me up (see above, The Curse). Ladies' garments in serious colors don't fulfill that requirement. Girl's skirts do.

Second, on some subconscious level, Tanit-Isis and her gorgeous ruffles must have gotten to me. Must. Sew. Ruffles.

Third, I've had a ruffled skirt of DD's in the mending pile for.. um... two years? Considering she's five, that's quite some time. Aside from the question whether a size three still fits her, I find it a whole lot more fun to sew something new than to mend a little hole. Anybody else feel the same way?

The Skirt: How-To

I drafted this myself, if drafting isn't too lofty a word for saying I measured, multiplied, cut rectangles and sewed them together. The length is below navel to above knee, the width is 1 1/2 times her waist circumference at the top and inner bottom parts. The top part is from blue corduroy, the inner bottom layer from the print fabric.

The ruffles are three times her waist width, hemmed on the top and bottom, gathered and sewn on top of the corduroy (right above the seam joining cord and print fabric) and below that on top of the print bottom layer so that both ruffles overlap slightly.

The Skirt: Design Plan Aborted

I intended to add another ruffle on the bottom, and maybe some decorative appliqué/pockets/whatever. DD saw how far I'd come, put the skirt on and declared it finished. Who am I to argue? I hemmed the bottom layer which comes down to the bottom of the lower ruffle and gives a nice doubled up/petticoat effect. That's it!

I love how she styles the skirt. DD asked, if I like her outfit so much, why don't I make one just like that for myself? Does anybody know the answer? Why do we dress so boringly as adults? I know some grown-ups manage to continue channeling their inner girl; what's the trick and why can't I?

Der Rock: Wie kam's dazu?

  1. Wenn deprimiert, hilft bunter Stoff (s.o., Der Fluch).

  2. Hat von Euch jemand Tanit-Isis' Rüschen gesehen? Ich. Will. Rüschen.
